-Welcome! -to the Melvindale Housing Commission.

Melvindale Housing Commission (MHC) currently serves nearly 350 households in Wayne County, Michigan.  As a public housing commission, MHC was established by the City of Melvindale on October 5, 1977 to provide affordable housing for low-income residents of Melvindale.

Coogan Terrace, a premier affordable apartment community, was converted from public housing to Section 8 with Low Income Housing Tax Credits in May of 2019.   Major renovation was initiated and is expected to be completed in September 2020.  All apartments received new flooring, new cabinets, new showers, new appliances and new smoke detectors.  Systems were replaced and/or upgraded including a new roof, new backup generator, new heating and cooling systems and renovated elevators.  Funding for renovation was made possible through a loan by Melvindale Housing Commission, Capital Impact and investment through purchase of low income tax credits by Cinnaire.

In addition to Coogan Terrace, MHC administers a tenant based rental assistance program, commonly referred to as the Housing Choice Voucher program.  In addition to a small portfolio of vouchers, MHC has also received Mainstream vouchers for disabled persons.
MHC is committed to creating and preserving affordable housing and caring livable communities; while serving the diverse needs of Wayne County residents through innovative programs, partnership and effective stewardship.

Funded primarily through the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the MHC is independently administered and governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners.   Board members are appointed by the Mayor of the City of Melvindale and approved by City Council.  The governing board typically meets the third Monday of each month at 3:00 p.m. in the Community Room of Coogan Terrace located at 3501 Oakwood Blvd., Melvindale, MI 48122.
